Cattaraugus County considers Animal Abuser Registry

Discussions will continue this week by two Cattaraugus County Legislative Committee’s on a proposed local law which establishes an Animal Abuser Registry, similar to the Sex Offender registry. Under the draft legislation, if a person is convicted of a crime against an animal, they would be on the registry for 15 years…but life for a second offense. During that time, the offender would be prohibited from owning an animal. Registrations fees would also apply. The online registry would be maintained by the Sheriff’s Office. A public hearing on the law could be scheduled as soon as Feb. 24.
