Fire kills one in Steuben County

Multiple fire departments responded to an early morning house fire on the New Galen Rd. in the Town of Wayland, which claimed the life of the occupant.  At 4:39 a.m., a passing motorist discovered a fully engulfed house fire at #9458 New Galen Rd., and contacted Steuben Co. 911.   Fire Depts. from Perkinsville, Atlanta, Wayland, Cohocton, South Dansville, Dansville Village, Wallace, and Avoca (stand-by) responded to the scene.  In addition, the New York State Police and the Steuben Co. Office of Emergency Services/Fire Investigation Team responded to determine the fire’s cause and origin.  During the investigation, a body was discovered inside the burned-out structure.  Steuben Co. Coroner Brian May responded to the scene and ordered the body removed to the Monroe Co. Medical Examiner’s Office, for the purpose of determining identity and cause of death.  Investigation by the New York State Police and the Steuben Co. Fire Investigation Team is ongoing.
