Obituary: Betty Kay Matison, 59, Andover

ANDOVER – Betty Kay Matison, 59, passed away Saturday (Feb. 20, 2016) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Betty was born on Oct. 19, 1955 in Hornell to James H. and Doris Ann (Updyke) Jackson. She was a 1974 graduate of Andover Central School.
Betty is survived by two sons, Earl Matison and Jeremy Matison, both of Andover; two sisters, Kim (Dan) Haswell of Andover and Brenda (Jeffrey) Everett of Grovetown, Ga.; three brothers, James (Debra) Jackson, Del Jackson and Jay Jackson, all of Andover; two uncles, Jerry (Joanne) Updyke of Greenwood and Clyde Jackson of N.J.; a special cousin, Andrew (Kelly) Jackson; two grandchildren, Eliora Matison of Monot, N.D. and Jaci Matison of Andover; one great granddaughter, Ari Bechel of Monot, N.D.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
From start to finish, Betty was always serving others. She chose to be a stay at home mom to take care of the needs of her family. It was during these years she developed her love of cooking and baking, to the delight of her two boys. She liked to sew, which came in handy in many ways. In later years, she served the elderly as a caregiver, making many new friends in the process. She also served in various ways at the Andover Alliance Church, where she attended for many years.
To her sons, she was a bit of a prankster. A favorite memory was the time she showed them the envelope containing the rattlesnake eggs with the warning “Handle with Care”. Another memory was the time she and her son Jeremy decided to “surprise” her other son Earl by showing up at his doorstep in North Carolina. She enjoyed her family and it showed in many ways.
There will be a time of visitation from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Philip Barner of the Andover Alliance Church, officiating. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
Memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be made to Andover Alliance Church, 5 Rochambeau Ave., Andover, NY 14806.
