Obituary: James Herman Newark, 96, Wellsville

Wellsville, NY - James Herman Newark, 96, of 6 Fairview Avenue passed away at home on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. He was born September 3, 1919 in Salamanca, the son of James B. and Iva (Weaver) Newark. On Dec. 27, 1941 in Salamanca he married Angeline “Nellie” Zeznick who predeceased him on May 27, 2008.
“Jim” was a graduate of Salamanca High School. He was a veteran of WW II serving with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the South Pacific. He was an Electrician’s Mate First Class aboard the USS Canberra. The Canberra was in 18 major battles and Jim was awarded six Battle Stars, the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, Philippine Independence Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed by New York Telephone for 33 years; retiring in 1978. He was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, and the Wellsville Lions Club. He was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and enjoyed Fishing, woodworking and hunting.
He is survived by three sons, James “Chip” (Sara) Newark of Belmont, George (Mary Ann) Newark of Elm Valley and Joseph (Sue Guichard) Newark of Wellsville, two daughters, Barbara (Glenn) Emery of Hallsville, MO and Nancy (Jeff) Orcutt of Cuba, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Anna Riddle, June Skrok and Marion Pieklo, two brothers, Jack and Burton Newark.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, February 7, 2016, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville. Burial, with military honors, will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Immaculate Conception School or any charity of the donor’s choice.
