Steuben County opens warming shelter as power outages continue

Press release:

STEUBEN COUNTY EMERGENCY SERVICES CONTINUES TO MONITOR THE AFFECTS FROM YESTERDAY’S WINTER STORM.  CURRENTLY THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 1,300 CUSTOMERS STILL WITHOUT POWER IN STEUBEN COUNTY.  NYSEG AS WELL AS STEUBEN RURAL ELECTRIC CO-OP ARE WORKING DILIGENTLY TO RESTORE POWER.  BECAUSE OF THE ONGOING POWER ISSUES, STEUBEN COUNTY EMERGENCY SERVICES HAS ACTIVATED THE FINGER LAKES CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS TO ESTABLISH A WARMING CENTER AT THE HOWARD FIRE STATION ON COUNTY ROUTE 70A IN HOWARD.  THOSE WITHOUT POWER ARE WELCOME AT THIS CENTER TO FIND WARM FROM THE STORM.  AT THIS TIME IT IS ESTIMATED THAT MUCH OF THE POWER WILL BE RESTORED BY THIS EVENING.

IT IS RECOMMENDED TO TURN OFF MAJOR APPLIANCES (ELECTRIC WATER HEATERS, REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS) AND SENSITIVE ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (TVS, VCRS, DVD PLAYERS, COMPUTERS,) TO PREVENT OVERLOADING AND POSSIBLE DAMAGE WHEN POWER IS RESTORED. TURNING OFF THIS EQUIPMENT MAY MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO UNPLUG IT, TURN OFF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER OR REMOVE THE FUSE FOR THE CIRCUIT IN YOUR HOME THAT PROVIDES POWER TO THIS EQUIPMENT. LEAVE ONE LIGHT SWITCH “ON” SO YOU’LL KNOW WHEN POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED.

EMERGENCY GENERATORS CAN BE DANGEROUS. IF YOU USE ONE, CAREFULLY FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS. OPERATE YOUR GENERATOR OUTDOORS IN A CLEAN, DRY, WELL-VENTILATED AREA AND NEVER INDOORS OR IN A GARAGE.

THE TRAVEL ADVISORY ISSUED TUESDAY AFTERNOON HAS BEEN LIFTED BUT MOTORISTS SHOULD CONTINUE TO USE CAUTION WHILE TRAVELING TODAY, SPECIFICALLY ON SECONDARY ROADS.  THERE ARE STILL AREAS WITH ICY PATCHES AND MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO DRIVE WITH CAUTION.
