Hornell - Elizabeth M. “Betty” Harwood, 92, of 580 Webb Road, passed away Wednesday (March 16, 2016) at Noyes Hospital in Dansville.
Born in Canisteo, January 10, 1924, the daughter of Wm. Burr and Harriett Cramer Comfort, she had resided in the Hornell area all her life. Betty was very proud to have received her GED from Alfred Almond Central School; with her son Randy’s graduating class in 1967. She had been employed at the former Westinghouse Plant in Bath, and managed the shoe department at the former FBC Plaza in Hornell. She also served as manager of the former Supreme Dairy in Hornell. She was a member of the Almond Union Church and had recently attended the Bishopville United Methodist Church.
Betty enjoyed crocheting afgans and blankets for her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed hiking with her family. At the age of 90, she began making and selling jewelry with her daughter Penny. Betty’s mother passed away when she was only 10, and she became a mother image to her eleven brothers and sisters.
Betty was actively involved as a member and past matron of Ivanhoe Chapter, #160 Order of Eastern Star in Hornell. She had also served as District Deputy Grand Matron of the Steuben District, Order of Eastern Star, and the Associate Grand Marshall for the Order of Eastern Star, State of New York in 1981.
She was predeceased by her husband Thomas F. Harwood in 2001, her son Randy Harwood in 2008 her granddaughter Debra Marie Mehlenbacher as well as her 5 sisters, Eva Miles, Vera Yundt, Nina Carpenter, Jean Whisnant, and Vaudine Callahan and her 6 brothers, Earl, Leo, Clifford, Wayne, Larry and Burr Comfort.
She is survived by four daughters, Dianne (George) Moore of Hornell, Sandra Mehlenbacher of Canisteo, Linda Drum of Hornell and Penny (Kirk McRae) Davidson of Almond, two sons, Thomas F. Harwood Jr. of California and Michael G. Harwood of Texas, her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Comfort of North Carolina, 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. where an Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
