State Police investigate fatal train / vehicle accident in Cayuga County

On March 24, 2016, at approximately 6:50 a.m. State Police investigated a train/vehicle fatal accident on North Main Street in the Town of Mentz, Cayuga County. Witnesses stated that a vehicle traveling southbound on North Main Street attempted to pass through the RR gates that were down and flashing when it was struck by an eastbound Amtrak Train.
The operator of the vehicle was ejected upon impact and killed. 
There were 61 passengers and 3 crew members on board the train and were not injured.  The passengers will be taken by bus to Syracuse and then resume their travel. Amtrak Officials and CSX Officials are on scene assisting with the investigation. The investigation is continuing.
