Wellsville: School teacher asks village to waive snake fee

A Wellsville Elementary school teacher  asked the village board Monday night to consider waiving the permit fee for his snake. Dan Allen (pictured) said he owns a three-foot long Ball python snake and keeps it as a pet at school. He confirmed that the snake is secured in an enclosure. Allen asked for an 'educational exemption' to the village $75 per year permit fee. Board members were hesitant and peppered Allen with questions about the snake and safety. Allen said the school principal has allowed the snake to remain at the school for educational purposes. Trustee Jamie Herman asked if the Board of Education has discussed the matter and Allen said "no." The village board told Allen to get the school board to grant permission in writing and the village would likely approve his request.
