Eric M. Smith is now thirty-six years old. In 1994, at the age of 13, he was convicted of second degree murder in the death of 4-year old Derrick Robie of Savona. Today, a parole board announced they had denied Smith his freedom for the 8th time. On August 2, 1993, Smith was riding his bike to a summer day camp in a local park and 4-year-old Derrick Robie was walking alone to that same camp. Smith saw Robie and lured him into a nearby wooded area. There, Smith strangled him, dropped a 26-pound rock on the boy’s head, undressed his body, and sodomized him with a tree limb. Smith is currently housed at the Collins Correctional Facility in Erie County. His 9th parole board hearing will be in two years.
