Mansfield-based state police say a 12 year old girl died after being struck by a car Tuesday night. The vehicle fled the scene. Trooper Watters said the deadly incident occurred at 7:12 p.m. on PA state route 287 in Morris Township, Tioga County. Police said the young girl was riding her bike when she was struck by a "white hatchback" type vehicle. A region-wide police alert was issued last night. Police said the vehicle will have front end damage and is missing a passenger side mirror. State police have not released the identity of the child.
According to First News Now, witnesses told troopers the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident unfolded. The driver did NOT stop. Instead the vehicle turned onto the Rattler Road, almost flipping the vehicle over as it turned. The highway was closed for several hours Tuesday night as police investigated the scene.
As of 9.a.m. Wednesday, the suspect remained at large. Anyone with information is asked to call PSP-Mansfield at 570-662-5151.
State police in Allegany County investigated a possible sighting of the suspect vehicle this morning. However, NY troopers said it was not the same vehicle involved in the fatal crash.
