BATH -- Shared services between the Steuben County office for the Aging and the City of Hornell saved county residents, businesses and taxpayers in the greater Hornell area nearly $304,00 in 2015, according to county OFA Director Patricia Baroody. Baroody said services provided at the Hornell Senior Center, located at 20 Broadway Mall in Hornell, saved $303,745 through health insurance/benefits counseling and other cost-saving assistance. The Hornell Senior Center opened in 1984 and now serves 4,782 residents in the region. The collaboration between the county and city allows her department to use its funds for direct services instead of paying for office space, with the savings boosting the Hornell area economy, Baroody said. The county OFA also employs its Broadway Mall staff from the Hornell area, she said. Baroody and the Hornell center staff gave City of Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan a tour of the changes at the center Wednesday, which included an upgrade of physical environment, blinds, ramp, paint, artwork and carpeting; a flat screen TV-DVD for community education and entertainment; the addition of a NYCONNECTS office on the first floor and the relocation of the RSVP office.

The upgrades were paid through state funding and private contributions, Baroody said.
