Allegany County Jail inmate attempts suicide by hanging

An Allegany County jail inmate attempted to hang himself Sunday morning. Regional News Network reached out the Sheriff Rick Whitney and he provided us with the following statement:

A 47-year-old male being held on child pornography charges attempted suicide by hanging at approximately 9:50 a.m.  Sunday.  He was discovered by an officer during a routine 15 minute check. Officers along with our nurse practitioner, who was at the jail, rendered first aid. The subject was transported to Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, where he was treated and held overnight. He was returned to the jail at approximately 2:30 p.m. Monday.
I, the Undersheriff, Jail Administrator and assistant Jail Administrator all responded to the jail on Sunday and completed a preliminary investigation. A report was filed with the State Commission of Corrections and they will determine whether any further investigation is warranted.
I commend our staff and Amity Rescue for doing an excellent job  that resulted in the saving of the inmates life.
