Allegany: Search for 16 missing kayakers on Allegheny River has good ending

Just before midnight Sunday, Allegany firefighters and EMS were contacted by Cattaraugus County Emergency Management regarding 16 kayakers that had called in about being in distress with an unknown location on the Allegheny River. The Allegany Technical Rescue Team launched its rescue boat at the First Street launch and proceeded to search the river, with the assistance from Westons Mills water rescue team and boat. After searching the river all the way to route 219, the search was called off due to extremely foggy conditions on the river. The state police helicopter also attempted to assist but could not continue because of the fog. The kayakers were contacted several hours later and "all were fine and continued their voyage down the river.  All units were back in service at 5a.m. Allegany fire extends its thanks to all mutual aid companies including Westons Mills, Town of Olean, and Hinsdale.
