Bolivar man released on probation after trying to strangle woman

A plea deal was reached this morning in Allegany County court in the case of a man who was accused on strangling a woman until she nearly passed out. Joseph L. Barrett, 37, of Main Street in Bolivar had faced a charge of felony strangulation and two counts of criminal mischief. This morning, he pleaded to the single count of 'attempted strangulation.'
The case dates back to December 22, 2015, in Bolivar, when Barrett was accused of choking a woman until she nearly passed out. The Bolivar man was also accused of smashing a cell phone so the victim could not call for help.
Judge Thomas Brown this morning sentenced Barrett to five years probation and assessed him the standard court costs.
