Hornell woman charged with welfare fraud, other charges

The New York State Police at Bath report the arrest of a Hornell women on welfare fraud related charges.  Melissa D. Weakland, age 41, of #480 Maple City Dr., Apt. #M2, Hornell, N.Y., was charged with Falsifying Business Records 1st degree and Offering a False Instrument for Filing, 1st degree (both class “E” felonies) as well as Welfare Fraud, 5th degree (class “A” misdemeanor).  Investigators from the Steuben Co. District Attorney’s Office and the Steuben Co. D.S.S. Fraud and Legal Unit examined records dating back to 2015, and concluded that between 11/24/15 and 05/31/15, Weakland allegedly provided false information to the Steuben Co. Dept. of Social Services and as a result, received public assistance that she was not entitled to.  Weakland was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable in the Village of Bath Court on 06/22/16 at 3:00 P.M.
