ANDOVER – Eileen M. Shephard Matacale, 51, formerly of Friendship, passed away Tuesday (June 28, 2016) at home, surrounded by family.
Eileen was born on July 3, 1964 in Cuba to Keith and the late Mildred (Fuller) Rumsey. She was a 1982 graduate of Friendship Central School and later graduated from Paul Smith’s College Culinary Arts Program. On Dec. 13, 2015, she married Vern M. Matacale, who survives.
Eileen worked as the head grounds keeper at Allegany County Department of Public Works in Belmont from 2008 to the present. She previously owned and operated Heritage Sweets Bakery and Coffee House in Friendship.
In addition to her husband, Eileen is survived by four sons, Jerrett Shephard of West Seneca, Jasun Shephard of Hornell, Nicholas Matacale of Canandaigua and Anthony Matacale of Arkport; two daughters, Chelsea (Stephen Rainelli) Shephard of Alfred Station and Ashlee Shephard of Andover; her father, Keith Rumsey of Friendship; two brothers, Mark (Pat) Rumsey of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kirk (JoAnn) Rumsey of Hornell; and four sisters, Kim (Blane) Berry of Rome, Linda (Keith) Rumsey-Dolega of Trumbull, Conn., Susan (Julius) Dichter of Litchfield, Conn. and Ellen (Michael) Shawl of Friendship.
Additionally, she is survived by the father of the four Shepherd children, Joseph Shepherd; three grandchildren, Lydia Rainelli, Liam Rainelli and Karsun Shephard; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eileen was a gentle and kind person. She was free spirited and sported a loving smile. She enjoyed the outdoors, always barefoot, and usually tending to her gardening. She possessed an exceptional green thump, often buying distressed and dying flowers just to give them a good home.
There will be a time of visitation from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home immediately following the visitation. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Friendship.
