This timeless musical fable has the reputation of being the world’s longest running musical. It centers on two neighbors, Hucklebee (Benjamin Lipscomb) and Bellomy (Jeff Babbitt), who hatch a plan to get their two children, Matt (Rory Tamimie) and Luisa (Christie Spear), together. The parents pretend to hate each other, build a wall between their houses, and hire a magician, El Gallo (Daniel Bennett), to stage an abduction of Luisa, so Matt can rescue her.
Two decrepit actors (Chris Tetta and Jamond Billyard) assist and round out the ensemble. It looks like the perfect plan, but life has a funny way of teaching its own lessons. “The Fantasticks” is an allegorical expression of youth, epitomized by the beginning of the first song’s lyrics: “Try to remember that time in September…”
The mix of fabulous music, laughter, adventure, and poignancy will make for a delightful evening of entertainment.
