Avoca native O'Dell, 49, killed in crash - Evening Tribune

 CARLINVILLE, Ill. — An Avoca native was killed Thursday night when his mud drag car hit a tractor, throwing him from the vehicle.

According to Macoupin County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Office, Kelly O’Dell, 49, of Williamson was killed Thursday at the Macoupin County Fairgrounds. O’Dell had been competing in a mud drag event as part of the Macoupin County Fair.

Several area media reports state that O’Dell’s vehicle went off the end of the track and hit a tractor at the fairgrounds. Deputies with the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office as well as Shipman Fire Rescue arrived to the scene at 9:25 p.m. Central time and removed O’Dell from the car.O’Dell was then transported to an area hospital where a county coroner pronounced him dead at around 9:35 p.m. The accident was still under investigation over the weekend.
