HAMMONDSPORT, NY – The latest thing to take flight in Hammondsport is the new Best Western Plus which will celebrate its grand opening with a special ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, July 25th at 10am. The event will be attended by a number of dignitaries including Congressman Tom Reed, State Senator Tom O'Mara, State Representative Phill Palmesano, the Commissioner and other members of Empire State Development and more. Immediately following the ribbon cutting, there will be a short reception with refreshments at the newly renovated Glenn H. Curtiss Museum (which is all but across the street from the hotel).
Cameron Dunlap and Brian Harris, owners of the new Hammondsport Hotel, want to showcase the local community and the rich history of Hammondsport. In addition to having the reception at the Curtiss Museum, visitors will find a half-scale replica of the Curtiss “Red Wing”—the plane flown in Hammondsport in 1908 as the first public flight in America of a heavier-than-air machine—hanging in the hotel lobby.
The new hotel is ideally located next door to Finger Lakes Beer Company, virtually across the street from the Curtiss Museum, and just minutes from Keuka Lake and the charming village square of Hammondsport, voted “Coolest Small Town in America” by readers of Budget Travel Magazine.
With 61 rooms, an indoor pool, fitness center, Wi-Fi, as well as pet-friendly and handicap accessible rooms, meeting space, and a full hot breakfast buffet featuring eggs, meat, potatoes, waffles, juices, coffee, tea, and more, the new hotel is a welcome addition to the community.
Dunlap and Harris are also taking a unique approach to the art in the hotel, showcasing the work of local photographer, Bob Magee, with wonderful scenic shots taken throughout the Finger Lakes region. Recipient of a CFA Grant through the Southern Tier Economic Council, the hotel is also a boon to the local community by creating fourteen new full and part-time jobs. And more available beds means more potential visitors and the economic impact of any additional tourist spending.
The architecture of the new hotel stands out as the exterior and interior design was done specifically to fit well with surrounding environment. For the interior, in addition to the Curtiss plane and the local photography, Dunlap and Harris have brought in other elements of the local community from a Ben Reno trout boat built in Hammondsport (a generous gift to the hotel from the Finger Lakes Boating Museum) to a special card rack handmade from a wine barrel by a local craftsman.
“We want every business in this local area to benefit,” said Dunlap. “We even make recommendations of other local inns and B&B’s if our prices might be too high for someone.” That cooperative and supportive spirit is a trademark of most of the businesses in Hammondsport and along Keuka Lake and another reason the region stands out to wine and craft beer lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and others seeking a fun Finger Lakes escape.
