BOLIVAR - James R. Watkins, 81, of 212 Olive St., passed away Friday (Aug. 26, 2016) at home following a lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 9, 1934, in Blossburg, Pa., he was the son of Benjamin and Ida Hazlett Watkins. Jim married the former Grace W. Ives on June, 25, 1955, in Elkland, Pa. Mrs. Watkins predeceased him on Feb. 18, 2010.
He was a graduate of the Elkland Joint High School, Class of 1952. He received his bachelor's degree in education from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania in 1956 and his master's degree in education and elementary administration from SUNY at Fredonia. Jim started his teaching career as a 6th grade teacher at Bolivar Central School for nine years. He was an elementary principal at Oswayo Valley School district for one year. In 1966, Jim became the elementary principal at Allentown, Scio and Belmont Central schools. In 1972, he became the elementary principal at Scio Central School, retiring in 1995.
Memberships include Bolivar United Methodist Church, Scio Lions Club, member and past member of the Macedonia Lodge 258 F&AM Bolivar, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, IAABO Basketball Officials Association of Allegany County, Allegany County Umpires Association, Allegany County Soccer Officials Association and a former trustee of the Village of Bolivar.
Mr. Watkins officiated soccer, basketball and baseball in Allegany County for many years.
Surviving are a son, Hugh (Nonie) Watkins of Rapid City, S.D.; three daughters, Rhonda (Richard) Roberts of Cuba, Debra (Darryl) Kloth of Jacksonville, Fla., Debra Roe (Tommy) McDaniel of Middleburg, Fla.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Other than his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Watkins; and a sister, Sylvia Dawn Hendershot.
Friends may call at the Schaffner Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 31, 2016). Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 1, 2016) at the funeral home. The Rev. Richard Roberts, Mr. Watkins' son-in-law, will officiate. Burial will be at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.
