BATH -- Three Steuben County deputies were credited Monday with saving the life of an Erwin woman in early July. County Sheriff David Cole told the county Legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee county deputies David Updyke and Brooke Payne responded within two minutes to a report of an unconscious, unresponsive person at 12:16 a.m. July 3 in the Town of Erwin. Updyke and Payne correctly assessed the unidentified person as suffering from an opioid overdose and administered Naloxone, with Sgt. Shawn Shutt assisting and continuing the appropriate treatment. Cole noted both Payne and Updyke were on overtime duty, and Shutt was supervising a DWI patrol in the Corning area, adding their correct response saved the life of the overdose victim.
