Storage trailers at Birdsall business catch fire; no injuries reported - Times Herald

Olean Times Herald

BIRDSALL — Three storage trailers at a furniture manufacturing business were destroyed by fire Monday evening.

At about 7:30 p.m., a fully involved structure fire was reported at Birdsall Bargain Barn at 3356 Joe McMahon Road.

“We could see the smoke from our village, and that’s 9 miles away,” said Angelica Hose Co. Chief John Werner, whose department was among five assisting the Birdsall Volunteer Fire Co.

No one was injured. Werner said the ignited trailers were loaded with mattresses and lumber.

“They were near one of the storage barns that they have,” he said.

Werner said it took firefighters an hour and a half to get the blaze under control.

“Because the three trailers were right side-by-side, and it was tough to get in there,” he added. “We couldn’t get real close to them. There was brush around that, and we had a couple of barns that were near so we had to squeeze between barns to stretch hose lines.

“It was good working with all the departments there. We had a good knockdown. We did save the one big barn that was really close to it. Another five minutes and it would’ve been a different story.”

The property is owned by Heidi Willmart of 3350 Joe McMahon Road, Angelica, according to Allegany County records.

Firefighters from Belfast, Canaseraga, Belmont and Short Tract also responded, as did Angelica and Canaseraga ambulance crews. The cause of the fire was under investigation, Werner said.
