Bicyclist hits tractor trailer in Portageville

On Thursday, Wyoming County Sheriff's Captain Edward Till and Sergeant Erik Tamol investigated a tractor trailer/ bicycle accident at the intersection of Route 436 and Main Street in the hamlet of Portageville that injured a Portageville teenager. A 17-year-old Portageville girl was traveling North on Main Street when she started down a steep incline and lost the brakes on her bicycle causing her to enter the intersection and slam into the side of a tractor trailer. The victim sustained a serious arm injury and deputies are crediting her use of a bicycle helmet from preventing her from sustaining more serious injuries. The helmet and bicycle were damaged in the crash. The truck driver, a 53-year-old man from Piffard, was not injured in the mishap. Pike Ambulance and Nunda Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene and no charges were file.
