On Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 12:34 a.m., the Cuba Fire Department (CFD) was initially dispatched for a cellar pumping detail at a residence on Prospect Street. Thirty-four CFD members responded. While on location, CFD was then dispatched to a possible water rescue on County Road 20 in the town where it was reported that two people were trapped inside of a camper due to high flooding. Chiefs on scene requested swift water rescue teams from Cattaraugus County including Westons Mills Fire Department and Allegany Fire Department. At the same time fire officials were alerted to multiple roadways and homes receiving extensive flooding damage. A number of mutual aid departments were then requested by chiefs to assist with evacuation procedures in areas such as Orchard, Mill, and West Main streets in the village and roadway shutdowns including County Road 20, both State Route 305 North and South, State Route 446, and a number of other town and village roadways.
Units and agencies assisting at various locations included Cuba 1, 3, 6, 7, and 9, HM-6, Cuba 801, Friendship Fire Department, Clarksville Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., Clarksville Ambulance, New Hudson Fire, Belfast Fire and Ambulance, Westons Mills Fire Department, Allegany Fire Department, Allegany County DC-2, Cuba PD, Town of Cuba Highway, Village of Cuba DPW, Allegany County Highway, and New York State Highway. The two camper occupants on County Road 20 were successfully rescued and no injuries were reported during any of the incidents. The flash flooding generated 16 total calls for CFD personnel and the last CFD units did not report back in service until 2:45 p.m. Sunday.
A weather spotter said he recorded more than six inches over rain between 6:00 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 a.m. Sunday on County Road 20.
