Houghton College has again been named a “Best College for the Money” by USA Today’s annual college ranking survey.
Named third in New York State and 27th in the nation for its excellent value, Houghton also received special commendation for its communication, music, and fine arts programs, placing it in the top 1 percent nationwide. This ranking is one of the latest to reinforce Houghton’s position as one of the best places in the nation to receive an affordable and high-quality education.
According to College Factual, the organization that calculates the rankings, colleges were evaluated based on a number of factors. This outcomes-focused ranking aims to discover “which colleges and universities offer the best bang for your buck—delivering quality education and economic value.”
Houghton’s Greatbatch School of Music was named second in the nation in value. The education program enjoyed similar accolades, placed in the top 5 percent nationwide for value and earning additional praise for the breadth and quality of its program. Three of the college’s programs—media studies, fine arts, and psychology—placed in the top 1 percent for value in the country. Intercultural studies and biology were also recognized for their excellent educational value, placed in the top 5 percent and 3 percent respectively.
Average yearly attendance cost, scholarship aid, post-graduation salary and retention rates are all taken into account when determining an institution’s position in the “Value” category. A similarly broad range of statistics, including student test scores, the caliber of the school’s professors and the student-to-faculty ratio, determines each school’s “Quality” ranking.
Jack Connell, Houghton’s Dean of the College and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, said, “These impressive rankings reflect Houghton’s sustained commitment to providing a high-quality education that is also affordable and accessible. I am particularly gratified to see the outstanding work of our faculty acknowledged by these commendations for our academic programs. Virtually every educational institution promises excellence; these results show that Houghton delivers on that promise.”
