Allegany County Area Foundation
The Allegany County Area foundation recently awarded a $500 grant to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program at the Whitesville Central School. The Big Brothers Big Sisters Program is sponsored by the Family Service Society, Inc. located in Corning, NY.
This new grant money will be used to fund a new educational initiative entitled Extracurricular Enrichment. Harmony Ayers-Friedlander, Executive Director at Family Service Society, said, “This new program will include a field trip to the National Soaring Museum in Elmira to tour the museum and learn about the history of motorless flight in the United States. Afterwards, the children and teens will enjoy a picnic lunch at the Harris Hill playground.”
The Big Brothers and Big Sisters (Bigs) meet with their Little Brothers and Little Sisters (Littles) weekly to participate in a wide variety of fun, educational activities. These activities include: community service projects, educational and cultural activities, fun recreational games , activities that teach life-skills and build character, team-building activities, and activities that build a strong bond between the “Big” and his/her “Little.” Last year more than twenty-five students participated in the program in Whitesville.
