Linear Accelerator Installation Work to Begin at Falck Cancer Center

ELMIRA, NY – A major piece of new equipment designed to improve treatment for cancer will be installed at the Falck Cancer Center at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. The Linear Accelerator (LINAC) will replace an existing system and provide state-of-the-art radiation therapy treatment for patients. The advanced LINAC delivers precisely focused beams of radiation with accuracy of approximately one millimeter. These beams are able to target cancer cells while avoiding the healthy tissue near the tumor. The system continuously monitors movement of the tumor as a patient breathes and dosage is only delivered when the tumor is in an exact spot, concentrating treatment on the targeted cells.

“This new LINAC allows a more effective dosage to be delivered in less than two minutes,” said Greg Denman, Director of the Falck Cancer Center. “This means our patients will spend less time in treatment and hopefully will experience fewer side effects.”

“Arnot Health is looking forward to the start of the installation, and of course we are thrilled at the prospect of offering a new level of treatment to our patients at the close of the project,” Denman said. Construction crews will begin site preparation work on October 28.
