Alfred: Saxons move up to 14th in Division III national poll

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University football team moved up a spot to in the national Division III rankings in the wake of the Saxons' Empire 8 Conference victory at Utica College on Saturday. 
AU, which improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in conference play with the 35-21 win, moved to 14th in the Top 25 poll, which was released Sunday evening. With the win, the Saxons clinched at least a share of the Empire 8 Conference title.

The Saxons' 9-0 start is the team's best since the 1981 squad finished the regular season a perfect 10-0 before dropping their first-round NCAA game. 
The 2010 Saxons began the year 5-0 and ultimately won the Empire 8 title with a perfect 6-0 conference record. That team went to the NCAA Division III national championship tournament and won two games before falling in the East Region finals to finish 10-3. AU was ranked 13th in the final poll in 2010, the team's best ranking ever.

The Saxons, the top-ranked team in the NCAA East Region rankings, wrap up their regular season Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m., when they host Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher in a game that will determine who gets the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA national championship tournament. Fisher, which moved from 23rd to 18th in the national poll, beat Hartwick on Saturday to improve to 8-1, 6-1 in league play.
