Allegany County Sheriff warns businesses, banks of scam

Allegany County Sheriff Rick Whitney reports that an ongoing scam has surfaced in the surrounding area. This “quick change” scam involves a young white male handing a clerk or teller several $100 bills and asking for $20 bills in return. After receiving the $20 bills, he will change his mind, hand the $20 bills back in return for the $100 bills. By using a “sleight of hand” he has removed the bottom portion of the stack of the $20 bills before returning them to the clerk or teller. Although no reports of this scam have surfaced in Allegany County, it has been reported as close as the Dansville area. The Sheriff asks all businesses to remind their employees to be very alert when receiving this type of request. If you feel you have been the victim of this or any scam, report it immediately by calling 911.
