Allegany County: Ad Hoc Committee presents local heroin & opioid abuse report

The November 10th meeting of the Allegany County Heroin & Opioid Ad Hoc Committee will be held in the Legislative Chambers in the County Office Building at 7 Court Street in Belmont from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.  The meeting agenda will feature the initial presentation of the Heroin and Opioid Abuse Report from Ardent Solutions based on local research that has been completed over the past three months.  Coordinated by Helen Evans, Associate Director of Ardent Solutions, the project focused on the impact of heroin and opioid abuse in Allegany County.  The report will discuss such issues as prevention, awareness, education, treatment, and law enforcement relating to local resources and practices.  The research has involved community focus groups and surveys in addition to compiling resources from local, state, and national sources. The Allegany County Heroin and Opioid Abuse Ad Hoc Committee was appointed in April 2016 by Allegany County Board of Legislators Human Services Committee Chairman Kevin LaForge.  Chaired by Legislator Judy Hopkins, the Ad Hoc Committee has brought together leaders from all sectors of Allegany County to investigate and develop strategies for dealing with heroin and opioid abuse.  The Committee seeks to find solutions through public awareness and education, treatment options, and bringing state and national resources to Allegany County. Hopkins said, “As a County and as a Legislature, we cannot ignore this problem that has reached into Allegany County.  Our citizens are being significantly impacted by heroin and opioid abuse.”

Since July, the Ad Hoc Committee has worked with Ardent Solutions to facilitate the research process and completion of this project.  The presentation of the Heroin and Opioid Abuse Report will point out recommended strategies and formation of action groups to work toward local solutions to the abuse issues. This meeting is open to the public.
