Opening Tip Saturday afternoon, St. Bonaventure hosts Alfred in its only exhibition game this year. It will be the Bonnies' final tune-up for their season-opener next weekend against St. Francis (Pa.).
Bona fans will see a new-look team take Bob Lanier Court for the beginning of the 50th season of the Reilly Center. While senior Denzel Gregg and juniors Jaylen Adams and Idris Taqqee return and will play lead roles, coach Mark Schmidt welcomes six newcomers – three upperclassmen and three freshmen.
For the Schmidt family, Saturday will be a first as father Mark coaches against two of his sons. Nick and Derek both play for Alfred. Nick is a junior who played in all 25 of the Saxons' games last season, averaging 5.4 points per game. Derek is a freshman. Both Schmidt boys played at Olean High School; Derek helped the Huskies to a state title last winter.
The game will tipoff at 4 p.m., or 30 minutes following the end of the Bonnies' women's exhibition game vs. Edinboro.
All tickets for Saturday's exhibition will be $7 and include admission to the women's game vs. Edinboro which will tip at 1:30 p.m. For more details, call the SBU Ticket Office at

Last season, 2016 graduates Dion Wright and Marcus Posley combined to average almost 36 points per game. Posley was named to the Atlantic 10's third team all-conference team. The 6-foot-7 Wright led the A-10 in double-doubles. Posley and Wright are now playing professionally.

Six new Bonnies will make their debuts on Saturday. Graduate student
Chinonso Obokoh joins St. Bonaventure after three years at Syracuse. The 6-foot-9 graduate of Rochester's Bishop Kearney High brings a presence to the paint. Junior Matt Mobley and senior David Andoh both sat out last season after transferring to St. Bonaventure. Mobley is a likely starter at shooting guard while Andoh figures to contribute at power forward. The Bonnies also welcome three freshmen: center Amadi Ikpeze from Buffalo, guard Tareq Coburn from Rosedale, N.Y., and forward Josh Ayeni from Zaria, Nigeria.
Junior point guard
Jaylen Adams will lead the Bonnies this season along with senior Denzel Gregg and junior Idris Taqqee. Adams, who earned first team All-Conference honors last season, has garnered several notable preseason honors. He was named to the Atlantic 10 preseason All-Conference first team, an honorable mention preseason All-American by Sports Illustrated, and the Big 4 preseason Player of the Year.

A member of the NCAA Div. III Empire 8 Conference, Alfred finished 10-15 last season including a 6-10 mark in conference action. The Saxons, who are coached by Russ Phillips, scored 74.5 points per game but allowed 75 a contest. Alfred returns 12 players (all five starters) from its 2015-16 squad and adds several new recruits, including Derek Schmidt and fellow freshmen Liam Ebert of Wellsville and Sam Dagon of Hornell. Junior point guard Tyler Seelman led Alfred in scoring last season at 16.4 points per game. Seelman made 69 three-pointers. Also back for Alfred are double-figure scorers Julian Reinhart (12.3) and Dalton Cousin (11.6). Junior forward Eric Adams led the Saxons in rebounding last season at 8.1 boards per game.

St. Bonaventure's new video board will debut as part of the doubleheader. Funded by a gift from a Trustee, the 13'x9' board hangs above center court and will provide fans with a dramatically enhanced experience.
