Steuben County jury finds Beard guilty of murder

A Steuben County jury Friday found Michael Beard of Elmira guilty in the 2015 death of Kelley Clayton of Caton. Clayton was beaten to death in her home September 29, 2015. The charges against Beard included murder 1st and 2nd. He was allegedly hired by Kelley's husband, former Elmira Jackal Thomas Clayton. His trial and that of a third defendant, will begin next year.
The jury began deliberating after 3 p.m. Thursday and reached a verdict Friday. The trial was handled by Chemung County District Attorney Weeden Wetmore after the Steuben DA recused himself because of a conflict. Thomas Clayton is currently free on bail. The third, defendant, Michael Blandford of Elmira, remains in the Steuben County jail. No word on a sentencing date.
