UPDATED Obituary: Nellie Mae Shields, 77, Alma

ALMA - Nellie Mae Shields, 77, of 5905 County Road 18, passed away unexpectedly Friday (Nov. 18, 2016) in her home. She was born Jan. 10, 1939, in Independence, a daughter of Phillip and Bessie Dean Saunders. On March 3, 1973, in Whitesville, she married Robert A. Shields Sr., who survives her. A lifelong resident of the Alma area, she enjoyed spending the past 15 years wintering in Lakeland, Fla. She was a graduate of Whitesville High School, and also was a graduate of a school of cosmetology in Buffalo. For several years she was employed at the La Gra Salon in Wellsville. Surviving in addition to her husband, Robert A. Shields Sr., are three daughters, Rhonda Gordon Turner of Orlando, Fla., Natalie Shields Gustafson of Wagontown, Pa., and Lauri Shields Smith of Alma; three sons, Daniel Jack Gordon of Wellsville, Robert Alston Shields Jr. of Ovid and Scott David Shields of Batavia; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leo Saunders of Whitesville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; a daughter, Marsha Lynn Shields Auman; and a sister, Belvera Rosell. Friends may call today (Nov. 22, 2016) at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville from noon to 2 p.m., when services will be held. Pastor Mark Ball will officiate. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Whitesville Rural Cemetery in Whitesville. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association , 315 Alberta Drive, Amherst, NY 14226.
