Allegany County: Cops don't shave...for a cause

L-R: Steve Havey (Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce), Sheriff Rick Whitney, Linda Bierman (K-Mart), Officer Tom Fanton (Wellsville PD) , Corrections Officer Bob Brooks and Connie Dixon (K-Mart)

The Allegany County Sheriff's Office and the Wellsville Village Police Department have once again grown beards to support the Shop with a Cop Christmas Program in Allegany County. For the past five years these officers have contributed to the program in exchange for the privilege of growing a beard during the fall hunting season.  This year the Allegany County Sheriff's Office raised $1,450.00 ($925 through the beard for bucks program, $425 from the TRIAD program and $100 from the female officers) and the Wellsville Police Department raised $300 for the program.
Sheriff Whitney stated “This is a great program for our area; it shows the children that they should not be afraid of law enforcement and also gives us some quality time to spend with these children”
The Shop with a Cop program gives each child breakfast with Santa, a wrapped gift for themselves and cash to shop for gifts for their family members. With the involvement of the various police agencies, this shopping trip takes on a whole different character.  The children, some afraid of the police, have a chance to meet their "very own cop" and have him or her help them with their Christmas shopping. Volunteers from the Wellsville Village Police, Allegany County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police and many other local police departments are on hand to serve as guides and helpers for the tiny shoppers.  This year marks the 24th year of this program in Allegany County and will take place on December 10th at the Wellsville K-Mart.
