Allegany County: Burt stiffs Hopkins

What appeared on the surface to be a routine appointment brought drama to the floor of the Allegany County Legislature Monday. Lawmakers passed this resolution:

ALLEGANY COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT BOARD
Offered by: Resource Management Committee
Pursuant to Soil and Water Conservation District Law §§ 6 and 7
            RESOLVED:
1.         That Karl Graves of Wellsville, New York, is reappointed to the Allegany County Soil and Water Conservation District Board as a Legislative Member, with a term of office commencing January 1, 2017, and expiring December 31, 2017.

2.         That Judith D. Hopkins of Fillmore, New York, is reappointed to the Allegany County Soil and Water Conservation District Board as a Legislative Member, with a term of office commencing January 1, 2017, and expiring December 31, 2017.

It was not a unanimous vote, however. Legislator Scott Burt, R-Scio, voted against the measure. More specifically, Burt voted against fellow legislator Judy Hopkins. Burt appeared miffed that Hopkins did not support his bid to be Vice Chairman of the legislature. Burt went as far as to insinuate that Hopkins traded her vote for the committee assignment. RNN spoke with several legislators Monday night. Everyone we spoke with was unhappy with Burt’s action. One legislator even called the move “shameful.”
